Better Together Birds Beak

The Bird's Beak is a traditional leatherworking knife design that has stood the test of time for one simple reason – it works.

Designed specifically for cutting curves, the long blade and open grip encourage the knife to naturally follow a line, rather than being influenced by small movements of the hand. It is surprising just how much a short blade and tight grip can affect the accuracy of a cut.

The sweeping curve of the blade also lends itself particularly well to freehand cutting. Think of the needle of a record player following the groove of a record; when used with a light touch, the knife naturally tracks the line with excellent control.

The Bird's Beak is available in three steel options:

  • O1 tool steel – excellent edge retention and easy to sharpen, but requires regular care to prevent corrosion. Fitted with a British Beech handle.
  • D2 tool steel – excellent wear resistance and edge retention, with greater corrosion resistance than O1. Available with Indian Rosewood or North American Black Walnut handles.
  • 14C28N stainless steel – cryogenically treated for enhanced performance, with excellent corrosion resistance and edge retention. Available with Indian Rosewood or North American Black Walnut handles.

Sharpening

For best results, we recommend maintaining the curved edge using a round strop charged with polishing compound.

Care

O1 tool steel requires some care to prevent corrosion. Keep the blade clean and dry when not in use and apply a light coat of oil periodically, particularly if the knife is being stored for any length of time.

D2 tool steel offers good corrosion resistance and requires less maintenance than O1. We still recommend keeping the blade clean and dry after use.

14C28N stainless steel offers excellent corrosion resistance and requires minimal maintenance. Keep the blade clean and dry to maintain its finish.

Please Note

Our knives are made as working tools and may show minor cosmetic marks from the manufacturing and finishing processes, including light scratches or marks to the surface of the steel.

These cosmetic variations do not affect the performance or functionality of the knife.

      Never disappoints

This is my second time ordering from georgebarnsley and sons and it never disappoints. The knife is very sharp, seems to be keeping its sharpness well and feels very high quality. Cuts through 3.5 mm leather like butter.
